Alumni Paul Comstock recognized as a 2013 ASLA Fellow

Class of ’89 Alumni Paul Comstock will be recognized as a 2013 ASLA Fellow at the 2013 ASLA Annual Meeting & Expo, November 15-18 in Boston. He is the second UCLA Extension Landscape Architecture Program Alumni to become a FASLA.

From ASLA 2013 Fellow Profiles:

Paul K. Comstock received his nomination, for Knowledge, from the Southern California Chapter. Over three decades he has practiced with an emphasis on themed environments and residences, including a stint as a Disney Imagineer. His research and collaborative spirit have influenced nurseries and growers around the world to expand their plant palettes, giving landscape architects the opportunity to incorporate forgotten or overlooked materials into their designs. His work balances independent research, sharing information with peers, and mentoring landscape architecture graduates. His seed exchange efforts and research on local practices have taken him to 80 countries—research that allows him to create a global range of environments and has propagated millions of plants for use throughout the U.S. He received his Landscape Architecture certificate from UCLA.

Please join us in recognizing this amazing Alumni for all his accomplishments!

Alumni in the News: July 12-14 2013

July 18, 2013 in Alumni in the News

July 12-14  National ASLA (American Society of Landscape Architecture) convened several national summits on important national issues affecting the profession of Landscape Architecture.  In their first Diversity Summit to discuss the obstacles to specifically Latino and African American’s in landscape architecture,12 emerging professionals from across the nation were chosen to attend.  From Southern California were two of UCLA Extension’s alumni, Tammy Martin and Jessica Centeno, (2012). A white paper and a strategic action plan will be developed to address increasing the awareness and the number of Latinos and African Americans in our profession.

ASLA also convened a Communication Summit where alumni  Martin Schwanauer ’07, was sent by the Southern California Chapter of ASLA to represent the Chapter. At the Communication Summit, ways to increase membership, diversity and awareness of the Landscape Architecture profession are shared and taught to representatives from all 54 chapter representatives.

And at the concurrent Advocacy Summit, Program Director Stephanie Landregan, an alumni  (’93) of the UCLA Extension Landscape Architecture Program , was the representative for the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards (CLARB), where she is the President-Elect. The Advocacy Summit discusses current national, regional and local legislative threats and issues and provides information and strategic tactics to chapters for use in their Government Affairs efforts.

UCLA Extension LA Program Charettes, Alumni Invited

March 5, 2013 in Events

The UCLA Extension Landscape Architecture Program has been invited to enter the Santa Monica Spring Jubilee Vignette Competition!

The theme is “Urban Tea Garden” and the challenge is to “translate the idea of an English Garden for the more arid Southern California landscape.” The top six designs will get a $300 stipend to build their design in a 10’ x 12’ freestanding cube to be displayed on the Third Street Promenade from May 4-5.

Because the space is so small, the design process should be a quick one. The LA Program is hoping to get it done in two charettes.  The first one is this Sunday, March 10, from 10am to noon.  The second one is next Sunday, March 17, also from 10am to noon.  Both days, the charette will be held in Room 314 at 1010 Westwood Center.

Students, faculty and alums who can make it are asked to please come by and help out.  This should be a lot of fun and a great learning experience as well.   Remember, this Saturday is Daylight Savings so plan accordingly!

If you have any questions, contact Stacie Preven at 310-428-8165 or

Alumni Connection President Yvonne English Will Be Lecturing on Planting Design at the 2012 Long Beach Landscape Expo

December 2, 2012 in Uncategorized

On October 10th and 11th the 2012 Long Beach Landscape Expo will be held at the Long Beach Convention Center.  This show is billed as the Number One Landscape Trade Show and Educational Conference in the West. Landscape Expo has been held since 1960 and is the longest running landscape trade show in the Southwestern United States.

Last year more than 3,500 industry professionals filled a twice-expanded, but still sold out, exhibit hall featuring 265 exhibitors in 557 booths. This year the event is expected to be even bigger.

Among the highlights of this event are the educational seminars. Alumni Connection President, Yvonne English (’07) will be presenting a seminar on The Planting Design Process on October 11th from 12:30 to 2:30 PM.
The description of this seminar follows:

“Plants are not just ornamental elements in the landscape, but, in fact, important building materials with a purpose. And landscape designs are often evaluated not just by the hardscape, but by the condition and appropriateness of the plants used on a project. This seminar will look at designing plants as both an art and a science. We will review design principles, plants as design elements and discuss the plant design process. Then we will review site requirements, three considerations for plant selection: functional, ecological and aesthetic. Finally we will show plant uses, and even a few planting mistakes.”

August 1, 2012 in Uncategorized

Alumni Connection presented awards to outstanding students at the UCLA Extension Landscape Architect Program 2012 Student Awards Ceremony on July 14th.

The selection criteria were: 1) how well the student solved their stated problem or program; and 2) how well they communicated the solution. The awards this year go to:

Jessica Barrie for her Design IV Spring Street Park project. Jessica’s design was well conceived, her boards were clear, and her process included a site inventory, site analysis, and provided the context to the street and adjacencies.

Dolly Chu for her Site Engineering and Watershed Management project and her Irrigation Plan. Both technical projects displayed thoroughness and clear sheet design.

Jessyca Frederick for her Advanced Graphics Culver City Museum of Art project. Her photoshop and graphic design skills were clearly demonstrated on both the boards and the well designed and highly readable book.

Samantha Hung for her well designed Construction Methods and Materials book. Her hand drawings were well done and showed a clear understanding of the different construction methods. And also for her Design VI Cal Arts Campus project with compelling graphics and a creative use of aerial views.

Julia Newton for her Design III Melnitz Stairs project. Julia’s process was thorough and well documented in her process book. Her boards were clear and the use of sections and color highlighted her design solution. The use of a model further demonstrated the design in the context of the space.

Linda Whitney for her Public Field Sequence project which clearly told the story of the space in a highly creative way that was visually arresting. And also for her Site Engineering and Watershed Management which demonstrated thoroughness and clear sheet design.

The Judging Committee members were:
Cathy Robert
Anne Jones
June Scott

In addition to the student awards a new award was instituted this year and our Alumni Connection President, Yvonne English (07), and President Elect, Debbie James (09) were pleased to present the first Honorary Member Award to Alexis Joan Shaffer. The Alumni Connection Board chose Alexis to receive this award for her contribution not only to Alumni Connection, but also to the Landscape Architect profession.
