New UCLA Extension Classes: Sketching in CUBA and How to Succeed in the Landscape Industry

June 12, 2017 in Education by Patricia Jennex

UCLA Extension is offering two special classes.

First a class on the business of landscape and secondly a travel abroad class to CUBA.

How to Succeed in the Landscape Industry

I have heard Judith Guido speak and asked her to do this class. She has worked in the industry for over 15 years, as a Vice-President and Marketing CEO for many big firms.  She is very impressive and a great speaker and networker.  I hope you take advantage of this offering.

Sketching on Location in CUBA

Richard Scott and I will be leading a sketching trip to CUBA! Covering Havana and its environs, we will visit many gardens and some of the famous organic gardening cooperatives. This will be a terrific tour and  may be the only opportunity you have to sketch in CUBA as there is discussion of again of the new administration curtailing travel to this country. We will be having a WEBINAR information session on this on June 27 at noon, so please tune in!

You can use your Alumni Connection membership to get a discount on the Landscape Industry course! (Cuba has no discounts.)

September 14, 2015 in Education, Events by Patricia Jennex

Understanding how the eye functions as light levels change is critical to successful lighting design. In this course, students learn the unique lighting design skills of manipulating the eye through dark and light spaces and creating safe night spaces and compositions. The course highlights
basic light concepts, such as the lighting vocabulary; how the eye and brain function to provide vision: how we see light and how it affects what we “see”; and how to quantify color for lighting design. Attendees learn various light
sources: incandescent, halogen, Fluorescent, HID, LED and Low Pressure Sodium; luminaires (fixtures); controls; and photometry. The course covers various exterior lighting applications for roadways, sports lighting, retail/commercial, structures, parking lots, building exteriors, landscapes and residential design.
Instruction covers the process of lighting design and its concepts, such as designing with respect to the dark sky; addressing safety and security. A discussion of the sustainable standards,
such as LEED; energy efficiency; municipal codes and standards; and how light affects health is presented.

Her multiple roles grant her hands on experience in all facets of landscape design project development, including preliminary design, site planning, planting, irrigation, lighting and water feature design, construction drawing specifications, construction support, and LEED sensitive design.

In 1995, Yvonne began training as a lighting designer with Bill Lochlin, the founder of Nightscaping. Her abilities expanded as she attended several workshops presented by Janet Moyer, the renowned expert of landscape lighting.
