Landscape Design Assistant Position
Regenerative Design Studios
San Pedro, CA

Expanding Landscape Design & Consulting Firm looking for one very bright and talented individual. Our business model and design style are founded deeply upon regenerative principles, on very large civic projects.

Part-time paid position, with the potential to become full-time. Requires knowledge and experience with regenerative landscape design: the utilization of ornamental California native plants, LID, SUSMP, rainwater catchment, greywater recycling, irrigation design/calculation, WUCOLs, AB-1881, as well as client coordination, project management including construction coordination, vendor relations, and partnering with affiliated industries including select architects, engineers and contractors.

Anticipated Activities:
• Preparation/Review of drawings: site analysis, conceptual, construction
• Preparation/Review of plant, materials and other site amenities and imagery documents
• Site Analysis, including site visits, surveying, photographing
• Submittal prep and presentation assistance to city, design team, clients, etc.
• Preparation of graphical presentation materials
• Assistance in selection and research of plants, construction material and site amenities
• Coordination with vendors & preparation of purchase orders

A successful candidate must possess the following:
• REQUIRED: BSLA, or MLA from an accredited landscape architecture program or UCLA Certificate of Landscape Architecture.
• MASTERY of AutoCAD & Adobe CS6+ Photoshop, InDesign & Illustrator (Additional Adobe Suite, SketchUp or other 3D Programs a plus)
• Excellent hand drafting and rendering skills
• Proficiency in using MS Word, Excel & Outlook
• A charming, proactive, bright and POSITIVE personality, able to take direction well – we are 100% driven by honesty, integrity and positive client relations and you must be too!
• Must be hardworking, motivated and flexible to respond to the ebb & flow that is inherent in our industry.
• Able to assist in managing projects technically, financially and on schedule
• Able to track schedules and establish priorities while handling multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously.
• Exceptional attention to detail
• Knowledge of principles and practices of organization, planning, records management and general administration
• Able to effectively & PROFESSIONALLY communicate both in written format and oral presentation
• Demonstrate good personal control and judgment under normal and stressful conditions
• Comfortable working in a quiet, or sometimes music-filled work environment
• Able to understand the needs of others and to offer viable cost effective solutions to diverse problems when appropriate
• Demonstrated understanding of design aesthetics and design process
• Excellent English and pleasant communicator with clients, architects, engineers, contractors, vendors and other contacts
• Must possess valid CA Driver’s License, maintain a satisfactory CA DMV record and be in possession of automobile insurance policy for your own vehicle

Experience:
• MINIMUM 1-2 years experience in a professional office, (experience can predate receipt of degree).
• The desire to become a registered Landscape Architect.
• Excellent references.

Position 1- Landscape Architect or Designer & Project Manager

Our Department oversees all the planning and Design for our 60,000 + acres of park facilities here in Orange County. We have a team comprised of Landscape Architects, Engineers, a planner and architect in addition to a natural resource specialist and regulatory compliance section.

The work involved in the position would be to assist the Division’s Project Managers with their project work (graphics and writing) as well as complete special projects assigned by the Division Manager and/or the OC Parks Director. The hours needed are between 30 & 40 hours/week.

Experience gained by the prospective employee would be very diverse and sometimes fast paced however, there is also over 200 years of combined experience among the staff from which to learn.

Course Description:
Plants are not just ornamental elements in the landscape, but, in fact, important building materials with a purpose. And landscape designs are often evaluated not just by the hardscape, but by the condition and appropriateness of the plants used on a project. This seminar will look at designing plants as both an art and a science. We will review design principles, plants as design elements and discuss the plant design process. Then we will review site requirements, three considerations for plant selection: functional, ecological and aesthetic. Finally we will show plant uses, and even a few planting mistakes.

Course Description:
Designing outdoor living areas is creating outdoor spaces, with or without walls, used for a purpose.  This seminar will discuss using basic design principles to create outdoor rooms such as kitchens, family rooms, retreats, etc. It will review safety, circulation, sizing, elements, such as seating and lighting, views and connections. Defining the outdoor space using floors, ceilings and walls of various types. Then there will be an overview of designing outdoor kitchens.

Yvonne English, registered landscape architect, licensed landscape contractor and LEED AP, is the founding principal of the landscape architecture firm, Legends Design Studio, Inc. Since 1994, Yvonne has designed and built commercial and residential landscapes in both the Midwest and California. Her residential designs range from intimate spaces and outdoor rooms to dramatic vanishing edge pools and spas. She loves to provide a nighttime dimension to her landscape creations with a dark sky friendly lighting plan. Yvonne believes to protect our environment; every design should incorporate sustainable design principles, like utilizing permeable paving, drought tolerant plants and low-volume irrigation systems.

Yvonne was originally a software engineer who changed careers to design landscapes. She has a Landscape Design Certificate from Saddleback College and received a Profession Landscape Architecture Certificate from the UCLA Extension Landscape Architecture Program. Teaching is another passion for Yvonne. She teaches Landscape Design and Residential Landscape Lighting for UCLA Extension’s Landscape Architecture Program. Yvonne has lectured at the Landscape Expo, the California and Lake Forest Garden Clubs and is on the advisory board for UCI’s Sustainable Community Planning & Development Program.
