This stimulating three-day experience is led by Marc Mertens, CEO of the revolutionary design firm A Hundred Years, which has been called an operation of “creative genius” (Forbes). It will also be led by the equally talented Barbara Groth, CEO and Creative Director of Big Buddha Baba. Both of these design firms work with projects that are catalysts of social change. In this intensive deep-dive into the tools and methodologies of design thinking, you’ll learn ways to strengthen employees’ insights, brainstorming skills, and design abilities.
Applicable to professionals in various industries, students are given hands-on design challenges, and encouraged to embark on the rich process of research and discovery that can translate into real-world benefits for your organization. Previous projects have involved app building, library reimagining, and redesigning how people experience art.

Course Discription:

This three-day workshop is an intensive deep dive into the tools and methodologies of design thinking and prototyping. Students are given a real-world design challenge and then embark on the process of research and discovery, mapping the challenge, brainstorming the possibilities, sketching and improvisation, defining the opportunity, and prototyping experiences to drive impact across digital and physical landscapes. The emphasis in the workshop is on immersion, collaboration, experimentation, invention, and experience design.

California Landscape Architect Elected President of International Organization

FAIRFAX, VIRGINA (UNITED STATES) – September 30, 2013 – Stephanie Landregan has been elected as President of the 2013-2014 Board of Directors for the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards (CLARB).

Landregan has held various leadership positions with CLARB since 2006, most recently servicing as President elect (2012-2013), Vice President (2011-2012), and serving as the CLARB Region V Director (2007-2009) and the Region V Alternate Director (2006-2007) as well as the CLARB Communications Committee Chairperson Nominations Committee (2005) and the CLARB Reciprocity Committee (2003-2004).

Closer to home, Landregan has served on the California Landscape Architects Technical Committee as Board Chair (2012, 2011, 2010 and 2005); Vice Chair (2003 and 2004); Board Member (2001-Present); and as a member of the Sunset Review Committee (2006-Present). She has served as American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Southern California Chapter as its President (2002-2003), Secretary (1999-2001), Trustee (2005-2008) and Liaison to Students (1997-1999). She has worked as a Planning Commissioner for the City of Glendale, California, since 2009, and served as Chair in 2011. She is a founding board member of the Glendale Parks and Open Space Foundation. She has served on various commissions in Glendale, and has been the Chairperson of both the Glendale Historic Preservation Commission and the City of LA Low Impact Development Guidelines Joint AIA and ASLA Committee.

Landregan earned a Landscape Architecture Certificate from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Extension Program in 1993. She also holds a BA in 3-Dimensional Art from the University of Kentucky and masters work in the Technical/Vocational Education program at the University of New Mexico. Stephanie is the Program Director for the UCLA Extension Landscape Architecture Program and the Horticulture and Gardening Program. She is currently licensed in California as a Landscape Architect.

Since 1970, CLARB has been dedicated to ensuring that all individuals who affect the natural and built environment through the practice of landscape architecture are sufficiently qualified to do so. CLARB and its members work together to establish standards for education, experience and examination required for the professional licensure of landscape architects. CLARB’s member include the licensure boards that regulate the profession of landscape architecture in the United States; the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico; and the Canadian provinces of British Colombia, Alberta and Ontario. The California Landscape Architects Technical Committee is a member of CLARB.”

Fundamentals of Exterior Lighting at UCLA Extension taught by Yvonne English ’07

Fundamentals of Exterior Lighting  through UCLA Extension will be taught by alumni Yvonne English (’07) on October 19; November 2 & 23, 2013, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM

This course focuses on how to design lighting that provides not only ambiance, but also provides safety in the landscape and functionality for outdoor tasks. The course covers the current lighting trends, techniques and products available to designers and installers.
