Fall Quarter 2015: Fundamentals of Exterior Lighting course at UCLA Extension

September 14, 2015 in Education, Events

Understanding how the eye functions as light levels change is critical to successful lighting design. In this course, students learn the unique lighting design skills of manipulating the eye through dark and light spaces and creating safe night spaces and compositions. The course highlights
basic light concepts, such as the lighting vocabulary; how the eye and brain function to provide vision: how we see light and how it affects what we “see”; and how to quantify color for lighting design. Attendees learn various light
sources: incandescent, halogen, Fluorescent, HID, LED and Low Pressure Sodium; luminaires (fixtures); controls; and photometry. The course covers various exterior lighting applications for roadways, sports lighting, retail/commercial, structures, parking lots, building exteriors, landscapes and residential design.
Instruction covers the process of lighting design and its concepts, such as designing with respect to the dark sky; addressing safety and security. A discussion of the sustainable standards,
such as LEED; energy efficiency; municipal codes and standards; and how light affects health is presented.

Speaker Event “Lighting Design Considering the Impacts of Light Pollution”

September 13, 2015 in Education, Events

Yvonne3Illumination Engineering Society of Orange County presents “Lighting Design Considering the Impacts of Light Pollution”

on Wednesday September 23rd

featured speaker Yvonne English (’08), PLA, ASLA, IES, LEED AP.

Mitigating the negative effects of excessive light in our environment is critical to human health and impacts on other species, sustainable energy and water quality. This presentation looks at how Landscape Architects, Landscape Designers and Lighting Designers can alter light pollution crises, creating a beneficially lit environment.

Yvonne English, UCLA Landscape Architecture Alumni, licensed Landscape Architect, Landscape Contractor, and LEED AP, is the founding principle of Legends Design Studio. Her multiple roles grant her hands on experience in all facets of landscape design project development, including preliminary design, site planning, planting, irrigation, lighting and water feature design, construction drawing specifications, construction support, and LEED sensitive design.

In 1995, Yvonne began training as a lighting designer with Bill Lochlin, the founder of Nightscaping. Her abilities expanded as she attended several workshops presented by Janet Moyer, the renowned expert of landscape lighting. Yvonne never forgot the knowledge gained from Janet’s wisdom and attended Janet’s 5-day professional Landscape Lighting Institute in New York. Her construction company, Legends in Landscape, has designed and installing lighting systems for the last 20 years.

Planting Design Process
Wednesday October 29th – 10:30 am – 12:00 pm
Presented by: Yvonne English
CEUs: APLD, PLANET
Course Description:
Plants are not just ornamental elements in the landscape, but, in fact, important building materials with a purpose. And landscape designs are often evaluated not just by the hardscape, but by the condition and appropriateness of the plants used on a project. This seminar will look at designing plants as both an art and a science. We will review design principles, plants as design elements and discuss the plant design process. Then we will review site requirements, three considerations for plant selection: functional, ecological and aesthetic. Finally we will show plant uses, and even a few planting mistakes.
